Welcome to my blog. There's nothing wrong with my name. I'm just a girl, struggling to keep up in the rat race. If you think you know me, read my blog and think again. I'm imperfect and i'm lovin it. I'm creative in my own way. I'm the only witness and only person who can judge my life.

so...
i was talking with a friend of mine about the annual dumpling festival today...
some random talk...
and by the way...
the dumpling i am talking about is NOT this:

BUT this:
happen to be discussing with both my brothers about the 2 types of dumpling last weekends...
the conversation is something like this:

me: how come both of them are call dumpling when there are so different in size, ingredient and pattern?? how do people differentiate it correctly??
bro: there wont be much cases where those 2 types of dumplings are selling at the same place..
me: the food court here do! if i wanna get dumpling but i dont know which stall then how do i ask people??!!
bro: you can just say you want dumpling.. they will understand you.. just go for some chinese..
me: what if the whole food court only have malay and indian???!!! (well doesnt really make sense.. i am just being funny)
bro: well then just say you wanna the rice kind of dumpling and not the flour kinda dumpling!!!
me: oh~~~ (no fun)

so...
enough of lame conversation...
here is what i wanted to share about...
so it happened that my friend thought the dumpling festival is just some festival...
dont know that there's some stories behind it...
so...
me, as a not so typical kinda chinese...
shall tell the stories...
well before this i must say that i am not particularly good with history...
so here goes the story:

Once upon a time, there was this great guy from China name Qu Yuan who is great (i think, if not his story wouldnt be so impactful) at what he is doing for a living. But apparently some evil people got jealous so he/they accused him for doing something bad that he didnt do. And so Qu Yuan being so sad and disappointed, he jump into a river (it is a river if i am not wrong). Then the villages/public knew about him committing suicide, and know that he is a good man, are afraid that his body will be eaten by the fishes in the river, so they wrap rice with leaves and throw it into the river, so that the fishes can leave Qu Yuan's body alone. And since then, the rice wrapped in leaves throwing ceremony became a custom. And so therefore, people lives happily ever after eating dumpling. =)
[ The moral value of the story: do not commit suicide if you are not famous enough! better still? dont commit at all ]

all right...
the above story is written based on my shallow knowledge and memories...
felt guilty for not being professional in the story telling...
(guess what? i am actually not a professional in story telling)
anyway...
decided to dig in for more details about this fez...
so i googled...
here's a picture of the guy in the story..

Mr Qu Yuan

the professional side of the story:
Every 5th of may in the lunar calendar is set as the dumpling festival. It is for the memorial of a great politician and patriotic poet (see i told you so he is famous) name Qu Yuan. (According to my resource), he is doing great in dealing in internal and foreign affair. But then the king believes to slanderous(this word reminds me of gossip girl XP) talk and so the king exile him to the North of Han(a place). After that the king was being imprison by another king and was killed in another country, Quan Yuan gets very angry and refuses to surrender to the 'killer king'... So the 'killer king' exiled him to a even more remote place in north of Han. During the exile, Qu Yuan never gave up, he continue to show his loyalty for the king and country by writing lots of poems (which artworks stay until today). But at the same time, Qu Yuan was tortured mentally and physically. One day, a fisherman saw him in a bad condition and advised him to not be so sturborn on his loyalty. Qu Yuan said: 'i rather jump into a river, be buried in the stomach of fishes, than being contaminated by 世俗的灰尘 (have no idea how to translate it.. google translate says 'Secular dust' o.O??). One day, another kingdom attacked Qu Yuan's country and are quite successful. Qu Yuan was devastated to see his country in trouble but he cannot do anything, so he hug a stone and sink himself in a river. Since then there is a dumpling festival. *THE END*
